10 Facts About Liposuction

LiposuctionHow much do you know about liposuction? If you’re like most people, you know it can help you look leaner, but that’s about all you know. Learning as much as you can about liposuction is important, so you know exactly what the procedure can and cannot do.

All About Liposuction

When people think about liposuction, they immediately imagine an easy way to get rid of unwanted fat. Most people know that a plastic surgeon simply sucks the fat out of the body. That’s not all they need to know, though. The following are 10 facts about liposuction, so you can make an informed decision about whether this procedure is right for you.

#1: It Doesn’t Remove All Fat

People who are obese cannot instantly become thin with liposuction. This procedure is primarily for people who are nearly at their ideal weight and want to lose excess fat in certain areas. For instance, losing fat in the abdominal area is quite difficult. If after eating healthy and exercising you still have undesirable fat there, liposuction can get rid of it for you. However, if you have a large amount of fat in your midsection, thighs, arms, and other areas that you want to remove, liposuction is not the right procedure for you.

#2: General or Local Anesthesia Can Be Used

General anesthesia is when patients are placed into a state of unconsciousness. Local anesthesia is simply numbing the area where the liposuction will be performed. A plastic surgeon will determine whether a patient needs general or local anesthesia. Usually, if there’s only a minimal amount of fat to be removed, local anesthesia is all that is needed. For those who need much more fat removed or multiple procedures, general anesthesia will be much more comfortable for the patient.

#3: Liposuction Can Remove Fat from Many Body Areas

Liposuction is effective in removing fat from the:

  • Back
  • Abdomen
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs
  • Inner knee
  • Chest
  • Cheeks, chin and neck
  • Calves and ankles
  • Upper arm

These are the main areas of the body that often accumulate fat. Smaller areas of the body may be treated with other procedures. Speak to one of our plastic surgeons for more information by sending us a message here.

#4: It Doesn’t Eliminate Cellulite

While liposuction reduces the appearance of cellulite in some people, it doesn’t eliminate it completely. Many people are surprised to see that they are thinner, but still have cellulite after the procedure.

#5: Liposuction Doesn’t Tighten Skin

Removing fat from the body will result in loose skin. The loose skin may tighten up in time, but not always. It’s important to speak to the plastic surgeon if you have concerns about lose skin after the procedure. The plastic surgeon may be able to remove the excess skin to give you a tighter, leaner look.

#6: People Who Smoke Can’t Have Liposuction

Smoking interferes with the safety of the procedure, so people who smoke should not get liposuction. Some people quit smoking just so they can have it performed, which is a great way to start on the path to a healthier lifestyle.

#7: Patients Return to Work after a Few Days

Recovery can take a week, so it’s important to plan to take at least a week off work. Many patients will use their vacation time to do it because it gives them the right amount of time off for it.

Full recovery takes approximately two weeks. This is when most patients can return to normal activities, such as exercising.

#8: Recovery Isn’t Too Uncomfortable

Most people report that they experience some swelling, soreness, and bruising, but it isn’t bothersome. The intensity of these effects depends on the individual and how much fat was removed during the procedure.

#9: Other Procedures Can Be Performed with the Liposuction

Many people will opt to have other procedures in addition to the liposuction. For instance, they may have a facelift or breast augmentation. Since they will already be under general anesthesia, it just makes sense to take care of everything at one time.

#10: Liposuction Doesn’t Keep You from Gaining Weight

Many people believe they can go back to an unhealthy lifestyle after liposuction and not gain weight. While the fat cells are removed in treated areas, it doesn’t mean fat won’t accumulate in other places. People who want lasting results from their liposuction should continue eating healthy and exercising.

5 Plastic Surgery Myths

Plastic Surgery Myths

With 17.5 million* total cosmetic procedures performed in 2017, it’s no surprise that there is a ton of misinformation circulating on the internet about plastic surgery. Here are the top 5 plastic surgery myths, along with the actual truth behind them:

MYTH 1 – PLASTIC SURGERY AND COSMETIC SURGERY ARE THE SAME

Plastic surgery involves a repair or enhancement, so almost any procedure has a cosmetic element. However, plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery are not the same thing. While there is no nationally recognized standardization of training for cosmetic surgeons, a plastic surgeon must receive board certification in plastic surgery from the American Board of Plastic Surgeons. A physician must complete five years in surgical training at an accredited hospital, with at least two of those years dedicated to plastic surgery.

MYTH 2 – LIPOSUCTION IS AN EFFECTIVE WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT

While liposuction removes fat from the body, it is not meant as a weight-loss tool. The procedure is designed to remove localized areas of fat from trouble spots that have not responded well to traditional diet and exercise. Weight-loss through liposuction is site-specific. The best liposuction candidate is someone at a fairly stable healthy weight, with areas of exercise resistant fatty deposits and who prefers a slightly different body shape.

MYTH 3 – PLASTIC SURGERY IS JUST FOR WOMEN

Plastic surgery is increasing in popularity among males. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, men accounted for 13% of all cosmetic surgical procedures and 8% of all minimally-invasive procedures in 2017**. Common procedures amongst men include gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction), facelift, rhinoplasty, liposuction and eyelid surgery. Common treatments also include Botox and fillers such as Juvederm to enhance their appearance.

MYTH 4 – PLASTIC SURGERY IS ONLY FOR THE RICH AND/OR FAMOUS

Do you think of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills when you hear the term plastic surgery? While it can increase a woman’s self-confidence by giving her the body she’s always dreamed of, it can also help babies born with severe birth defects, or give a breast cancer survivor a new outlook on life. Not every patient of Suffolk Plastic Surgeons, PC wears designer labels or is adorned in diamonds. Most patients are just regular people seeking increased confidence through an enhanced appearance! We offer a number of financing options [link] and, in some cases, insurance may even cover the cost.

MYTH 5 – FAT CAN APPEAR IN OTHER AREAS AFTER LIPOSUCTION

If fat reappears after liposuction, it is not due to the procedure! During a liposuction procedure, fat cells are removed from the body. If a patient gains weight, fat can reappear in other places. A continued plan of exercise and healthy eating to prevent weight gain is key to long-lasting results. In some cases, a patient might perceive increased fat because after the procedure, the perception of their body is out of proportion. For example, a woman might feel as if her arms look heavier after having liposuction on her thighs.

Cosmetic Procedures to Help Lose Those Winter Pounds

Procedures to lose Winter Pounds

It’s very common to overindulge over the holidays, which is why one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is to lose weight. Even with proper diet and exercise starting on January 1st, there are specific body areas that will always be resistant to change without extra help. Cosmetic surgery is really best for addressing things that your trainer can’t such as after-pregnancy pouch, loose skin, stubborn fat areas and breast size/volume.

Suffolk Plastic Surgeons, P.C. can help contour your body in 2019 with invasive and noninvasive treatments:

Liposuction

Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that removes localized areas of fat from the body through a small tube called a cannula. If a patient is in good overall health and maintains a healthy lifestyle, but has one or more problem areas with unresponsive fat deposits, they are a candidate. Liposuction is performed through a tumescent technique, and may also include the assistance of ultrasound imaging or laser energy. Unlike a diet and exercise plan, liposuction can contour areas of the body where fat is difficult to lose, and is a permanent solution to excess fat deposits in tough-to-reach body areas.

VASERlipo®

VASER is a one-of-a-kind precision body-sculpting system, which provides surgeons with advanced technology to create dramatic contouring compared to traditional liposuction. It is unique in its ability to target fat while leaving other important tissues intact. With VASER, treat multiple areas in a single procedure with less pain, swelling and downtime. See immediate and precise sculpting results!

CoolSculpting

Fat cells hate the cold. It’s science! Fat cells will freeze at higher temperatures than their surrounding tissues. CoolSculpting technology enables us to precisely target fat cells beneath the skin, and cool them down to temperatures that initiate their natural death. Diet and exercise can help diminish the appearance of fat cells, but they don’t permanently remove them. CoolSculpting freezes off fat cells for good, enhancing your diet plan and serving as great encouragement for continuing that healthy lifestyle. CoolSculpting results are long-term and with no downtime!

Tummy Tuck

A flat and well-toned stomach is something many strive for through exercise and weight control. When these methods fail, a Tummy Tuck can achieve those goals! Abdominoplasty removes excess fat and skin and, in most cases, restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is firmer and smoother.

Mommy Makeover

Get back to your pre-pregnancy body with a Mommy Makeover. This package combines some of our more popular procedures into one and can include tummy tuck, liposuction and/or breast enhancement. By having multiple procedures at a time, patients only have to recover once, instead of two or three separate times.

With the long winter ahead of us, now is perfect time to plan for summer! Trading in sweaters for bikinis in 2019 will seem discouraging when carrying around a few extra holiday pounds! One of the most optimal times for plastic surgery is in the late winter and early spring. Be beach-ready long before summer, call Suffolk Plastic Surgeons P.C. now at 631-364-0333 to schedule a complimentary consultation.

Getting Your Pre-Pregnancy Body Back

Pre-Pregnancy Body Back

New motherhood is one of the greatest experiences you will ever have. We’re sure you love every moment of being a Mommy, but pregnancy and breastfeeding can take its toll on your body! Unfortunately, your body will never be exactly the same as it was before having kids on its own. Your figure may be saggier, softer, or larger. After birth, your body may have issues regaining its original skin elasticity, muscle tone, and slim physique. Your breasts will change shape and size and your abdomen will expand and contract, but rarely back where it was before pregnancy. Your hips, butt and thighs will also increase in size during pregnancy.

For some lucky ladies, their bodies spring back into their old shape, but unfortunately for most, that doesn’t happen. Diet and exercise can only help so much and for many women, diet or exercise will never get their bodies back to the way they were.

The Mommy Makeover at Suffolk Plastic Surgeons, PC Is designed to help correct the following conditions that happen to your body after pregnancy:

• Sagging breasts
• Small or deflated breasts
• A protruding abdomen
• Separated abdominal muscles
• Stretched skin on the abdomen
• Excess stubborn fat on the body

While one or more of the above might not apply to everyone, we’d say these things occur in the majority of women. Our Mommy Makeover is a customized set of procedures selected to address your personal needs and typically includes the following procedures:

Tummy Tuck
Liposuction
Breast Enhancement

Some moms need a breast lift to get their pre-baby body back, some need a breast augmentation and a tummy tuck. These procedures can be completed in different stages at different times.

Tummy Tuck

After you give birth, the skin on your stomach might not be as tight as it was pre-pregnancy. A Tummy Tuck [link] involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the abdominal area and tightening of the abdominal muscles, if necessary. Skin doesn’t respond to exercise so this is a popular procedure for mothers. A tummy tuck will also help remove stretch marks in this area!

Liposuction

Liposuction is a removal of stubborn fat cells that are not responding to diet and exercise. After giving birth, fat can accumulate on the abdomen, thighs, hips, and buttocks, and might not go away with exercise. Often, liposuction may be used solely or in combination with the other procedures to give Mom the firm look that her body had before the baby.

Breast Enhancement

Many women find that their breasts are smaller after breastfeeding, and that they are sagging in a way that chest exercising would never correct. Breast augmentation involves placing an implant in the breast to replace volume you’ve lost. If your breasts are sagging after pregnancy, a breast lift will return them to their position and shape. A breast lift and augmentation can be combined if needed.
